Last week I was insulted when a friend said “Choosing between a gas or electric chainsaw is like choosing between paper or plastic.” I never felt more insulted. We were talking about chainsaws, something serious. It’s not like we’re talking McDonalds’ or Burger King. Urrghhh, some people will never learn. I personally prefer not to play favorites between electric and gas powered chainsaws. I like to keep both types on hand, electric chainsaws for quick jobs and gas chainsaws for more arduous tasks. Today I’ll be going in to detail about one of my favorite electric chainsaws, the Poulan Pro 400E Electric Chainsaw.

I do not have the audacity and nerve of some other chainsaw review writers and say “it will cut 10 feet of oak in 10 seconds”. The Poulan Pro 400E is not for cutting down giant trees or taming the Alaskan Frontier. But it’s still one of the best chainsaws out there for cutting firewood and pruning thicker tree branches and bushes. It’s also very light, making it a lot easier on the arms to accomplish tasks that will last longer than 20 minutes.

Another reason why I like the Poulan Pro Electric Chainsaw is the no hassle maintenance. No priming pumps, no messy, smelly gas. Just grab an extension cord and turn it on to start your work quickly. Just remember, like all chainsaws, the Poulan Pro 400E Electric Chainsaw does require regular lubrication. If you’re chainsaw is not properly lubricated, you’re going to have problems and plenty of frustration. Just look at the directions, they should tell you everything you need to know for maintaining your chainsaw.

Of course, I can’t overlook cost. Cost one of the main reasons why I have rated the Poulan 400E Electric Chainsaw so high. It retails for about $90 online and Amazon offers free shipping. There’s not too much of a chance your local hardware store is going to be able to beat that price. I strongly recommend the Poulan Pro 400E Chainsaw to just about anyone with a yard to maintain.

Hello! I am shopping for an electric chainsaw and are considering both the Poulan Pro and the Makita that you have reviewed. I live in an area that has many tall (ie: 80 feet tall) pine trees that will shed their limbs in bad storms.
Would you say that the Makita outperforms the Poulan enough to justify the almost double price?
Thanks!
